What began as a kitchen renovation evolved into a transformative addition that reshaped how this family lives and moves through their space.
The home, a classic storybook-style, was rich in charm but short on function. The original kitchen was narrow and closed off, with a peninsula that blocked sightlines and natural light. A small, impractical powder room offered little utility, and the overall layout felt cramped and disconnected.
A rear addition allowed for a new kitchen and sitting area—now the true heart of the home. The footprint of the former kitchen became a proper bathroom and mudroom, while the new kitchen sits where a deck once was. This reconfiguration dramatically improved flow and functionality, all while preserving the backyard and deck space which was a priority for these homeowners.
The new side entry gave us the opportunity to create a welcoming mudroom. A built-in bench includes clever double-drawer storage and open shelving above for seasonal essentials. A paver-inspired tile pattern connects inside and out, and repetition of material palettes tie the interior spaces together seamlessly.
In the kitchen, perimeter cabinetry in Benjamin Moore’s “Linen White” nods to the original trim color, while the island (eliminated comma) finished in Greenfield’s “Dorian Gray,” adds contrast. Tahiti Quartzite countertops, smoked-glass pendants from Hubbardton Forge, and a marble subway backsplash add texture and a sense of understated elegance.
A nearby coffee bar with glass-front cabinets provides both function and interest with an accent mosaic backsplash. Beyond the kitchen, a custom bench seat with built-in storage anchors a cozy sitting area framed by bookshelves—designed as a secondary space for reading, music, or relaxing.
In the dining room, we focused on subtle updates as access points to the room shifted. What was previously a corner China cabinet became two symmetrical built ins for additional storage, and wallpaper that is subtly reminiscent of the custom painted stripes that previously adorned the walls gives this space a new lease on life.
From a design perspective, this project was a beautiful example of how a home can be transformed—without losing its charm—through intentional design and collaborative planning.
