Our Newton, MA clients loved the location and overall footprint of their home, but stylistically, it didn’t feel quite right. Their multi-level town home had more of a builder-grade feel to it, lacking the modern aesthetic and personalized touches that they desired. A guiding influence for their design was a beloved New England Mountain Modern home that felt like it perfectly expressed their style.

On the first floor, we began by removing an unused corner fireplace to open the space. We updated the kitchen to be more in line with the client’s tastes, opting for white cabinets offset by a white oak kitchen island and a modern subway backsplash. The first-floor bathroom features a beautiful venetian plaster on the walls that is used throughout the home in different tones. This was done by a local artisan and added a unique texture that wallpaper could not replicate. We replaced the existing vanity with a custom white oak console vanity to give the narrow bathroom the illusion of more space.

The biggest transformation in the home was reimagining the configuration of bathrooms and walk in closet on the second floor. Previously, the closet sat at the front of the home, flooded with natural light from a bay window, while the windowless bathroom felt dark and disconnected. By switching the position of these two rooms, our clients can take advantage of great lighting when they start and end their days. Updates were made to an additional second floor bathroom, removing the existing tub and replacing with a curb-less shower and linear drain. The large format tiles are meant to look like wood, feeling tonal and textural in this peaceful space.

On the third floor, we updated bathroom’s layout for a more intuitive flow. By switching the position of the vanity and the shower, our clients gained easier access into this bathroom, which is used frequently, as it is adjacent to their work and relaxation space. Today, the clients say that their home in Newton feels more like them—a true reflection of their style and lifestyle.
