In this kitchen renovation in Reading, MA, the goal was to transform an existing, underperforming layout into a more functional, open, and cohesive space that better supported a busy family’s everyday life, without expanding the original footprint. These clients had worked with Lee Kimball before on a mudroom project a few years earlier.

The original kitchen was a U-shaped configuration with a peninsula layout that felt fragmented and inefficient. Although the kitchen technically served the household, it lacked both circulation and sufficient, comfortable seating for the family of four.

The redesign retained the existing footprint but rethought the placement of access, appliances, and seating. A key priority was improving circulation while preserving openness to adjacent outdoor spaces. By carefully reworking the layout, we were able to introduce a more functional island while maintaining comfortable walkway clearances on all sides. The island became a central gathering point, incorporating shallow top drawers for everyday essentials and four-seat casual dining. Leaving the base visually open was an intentional move to preserve a sense of airiness; as opposed to a traditionally built in island that would have visually compressed the room and disrupted the lightness of the space.

Material selection played an important role in elevating the overall design. The perimeter countertops were done in a brushed finish quartzite stone (Stracciatello), chosen for its movement and natural variation. The kitchen also features hand-painted outlets to mimic the stone, maintaining visual continuity throughout.

Storage was carefully considered throughout the design. Rather than presenting as a dominant feature, pantry storage was integrated seamlessly into the millwork, blending into the architecture of the kitchen. This allowed for a significant increase in functional storage—ideal for pantry items, snack storage, and pet supplies—without visually cluttering the space or competing with the clean architectural lines.

The result is a kitchen that feels cohesive, light-filled, and highly functional—where every detail, from circulation to storage to materials, works together to support both everyday living and effortless entertaining.
