A Multi-Generational ADU in Reading, MA

A Vision for Multi-Generational Living

We recently visited the Gibbs family for an update on their new Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Reading, MA. Last time we spoke with them, they were approaching completion of their two-level addition meant to give their daughter Sam, who is now in cosmetology school, supervised independence. The project created Sam’s accessory apartment off of the back part of their existing home, with an expansive master suite above it for Rob and Lisa. The family also added an in-ground swimming pool to their back yard.

Now that their ADU is finished, Lisa, Rob and Sam reflected on their time with Lee Kimball and how their lives have been impacted by the changes and additions to their space. “The day they took the construction sign out of our lawn, “I was like ‘oh wow, it’s almost over’”, said Lisa. “I couldn’t believe it. Everyone who worked on our house was so friendly, and even though we weren’t living in the new space yet, they cleaned up every day”.

The Gibbs family told us they genuinely enjoyed the construction process, from working with architect Nancy Twomey on three different iterations of drawings and longtime friend Bruce Johnson who provided unique ideas for their space. The idea that stuck was turning a portion of Sam’s apartment into a shared living space, where the family gathers frequently and entertains guests. “Sometimes I tell my parents ‘I love you, but time to give me my space’” said Sam.

Design that tells a Story

Another notable part of the process was working with lead designer, Madison Jackson, on the selections for their home. “She didn’t say ‘go to a tile store and pick something out’, she really got to know us. She would come prepared with a few options and we would narrow things down in a really seamless way” said Lisa. “We didn’t have a vision, but Lee Kimball helped us bring one to life”. And lively it is. The accessory apartment is reminiscent of a cape cod summer, with teal blue kitchen cabinetry complimented by neutral open shelves and a white elongated hexagon backsplash. Sam’s bedroom and bathroom are calming, with tones of navy blue featured strategically.

Family Favorites

When asked what their favorite part of the finished project is, each family member had a unique perspective. Rob chose the family space of the apartment “I love having guests in here and the fact that it opens right up to the new pool” he said. When it was time for Sam to answer, she first mentioned that her favorite thing was getting to know the Lee Kimball team and having them around. But as far as space goes, her new apartment, and a place to practice her new skills from her cosmetology program, tops the list.

“I know my mom is going to say her closet” said Sam. And indeed, Lisa’s favorite feature is the generous walk-in closet that is part of her new master suite. “And having laundry upstairs is a total game-changer” Lisa remarked. “But if I’m thinking big picture, having the new apartment and being in a different part of the house but able to hear Sam in here doing her thing? That’s what it was all about”.
